A visit to Mexico City gives Amiga’s a chance to celebrate the life of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo who is remembered for her self-portraits expressing pain, passion, and bold vibrant colors. She is celebrated in Mexico for her attention to Mexican and indigenous culture and by feminists for her depiction of the female experience. Frida’s passion, includes her husband, Mexico’s beloved artist Diego Rivera. Diego Rivera’s murals are located throughout Mexico City, which depicts Mexico’s history, culture, and lifestyle

Itinerary

Day 1 July 5Check in & Welcome Dinner

Upon arriving Mexico City Airport, transportation will be provided from the airport to the hotel.
Guests will check in to the Hotel, centrally located in the Centro Historico.
Those guest that arrive before 6pm will enjoy a rooftop welcome dinner.

Day 2 July 6 Frida Kahlo Birthday - Day visit to Coyoacán & Casa Azul

We will begin the day in Frida’s neighborhood of Coyoacán, to get familiar with her daily life, starting with breakfast Cafe La Esquina de los Milagros. The group will stroll through the main square and tour Coyoacán Mercado, a traditional market filled with fresh goods, clothing and folk art. Then on to a tree lined street just 2 block walk to the Frida Kahlo Museum, “La Casa Azul” . The museum exhibits Frida’s wardrobe, artwork and her traditional kitchen, art studio, and serene gardens. Pending pandemic restrictions, we will participate festivities celebrating Frida’s Kahlos Birthday, hosted by the museum.
A quick lunch break, then on to the Bazar Artesanal Mercado.
The colorful, traditional “Bazar Artesanal Mexicano” occupies two stories of stalls on the street dividing Plaza Hidalgo and Parque Centenario, an area with cafes, ice cream shops and restaurants. Vendors large and small sell local art, clothing, and toys. You can also find textiles, candy, furniture, pottery and jewelry brought in from Taxco, Puebla, Oaxaca, Veracruz and other parts of Mexico. It is not hard to imagine Frida Kahlo buying a flamboyant indigenous dress at this market.
The group will return to the hotel for rest or afternoon swim at the hotel. We will end the day celebratory dinner at La Casa de La Sirenas, a rooftop setting overlooking the Cathedral.

Day 3 July 7Explore El Zocalo & Bellas Artes. - Diego Rivera Murals

We will start the day enjoying a traditional breakfast Mexican restaurant, then on to a Zocalo Walking Tour, to view theDiego Rivera Murals in the Goverment Palace, Templo Mayor Musuem and The Cathedral. A lunch break at the beautiful Casa de los Azuelos or House of Tiles. Across the street, we will enjoy Bellas Artes Palace. The most important place for culture in Mexico. Inside the museum, in addition to the art, is a grand lobby, a restaurant, a theater and a gift shop that sells beautiful cultural themed items.The highlight is “Los Grandes de Arte” – Rivera, Orozco & Siqueros Murals. After visiting Bellas Artes, a stop at La Ciudadela; this market has hundreds of stalls with goods from all over Mexico. You’ll find talavera pottery, hand-embroidered clothing, paper Mache skulls, leather goods and much more. Return to Hotel to rest, then dinner at Historico Azul Restuarant.

Day 4 July 8Chapultepec Park - Museum of Modern Art - Las Dos Fridas

Our day wil begin at The Museum of Anthropology; the most important museum in Mexico and Latin America. It was built especially to focus on the indigenous peoples in Mexico, telling the story through time from the cavemen to the great ancient civilizations. Inside the museum are specialized rooms for different pre-Hispanic cultures, but the most important is the Aztec, where in the main hall is the Sunstone, often referred to as the “Aztec Calendar”. This museum is stunning and breathtaking, no other way to describe this experience.

Next a visit to Museum of Modern Art also situated in Chapultepec Park, the museum includes works of famous Mexican artists women to include Frida Kahlo, María Izquierdo and Cordelia Ureta. The famous painting “The Two Fridas” belongs to the museum’s fund. “The ‘Two Frida’s” was completed shortly after her divorce with Diego Rivera. This portrait shows Frida’s two different personalities. One is the traditional Frida in Tehuana costume, with a broken heart, sitting next to an independent, modern dressed Frida. The group will enjoy a lunch break at the museum lush gardens. Return to the hotel for a rest. The evening will include experiencing a new exhibit “Frida Immersiva”
Frida Immersiva Experience- a unique & immersive 45 minute multimedia experience that transport her art and messages .
After the show, the group will enjoy a dinner in the heart of the Centro Historico

Day 5 July 9San Angel - Frida & Diego Studios

We will begin our day in San Angel Colonia, with a luxury breakfast at “Saks”. The group will continue to enjoy the San Angel neighborhood with cobbled stone streets, elaborately decorated stone mansions. The neighborhood is full of history, excellent restaurants, and cultural-themed shopping. San Angel hosts, Bazar Sabado, which showcases artisans of fine art, sophisticated culture themed jewelry, and good quality folk art . Similar to Coyoacán, San Angel, was preferred by artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and spent a great deal of their lives between both neighborhoods. After a quick lunch the group will visit, Diego Studios a complex where Diego Rivera & Frida Kahlo lived together, although separate houses. The Rivera and Kahlo houses, are painted red and blue respectively, they are plain and stark, typical examples of the style called functionalism. The homes display many of both Diego and Frida everyday items.
The group will enjoy an dinner at San Angel Inn across the street, a much like San Angel charming and quaint.

Day 6 - July 10Depart- Last Day
