Stepping Inside Frida’s Inner World: My Visit to Museo Casa Kahlo (Casa Roja)

During my visit to Mexico City, my first stop was visiting Coyoacán, my favorite colonial in Mexico City. I was looking forward to visiting the new Museo Casa Kahlo, also known as Casa Roja. Just a few blocks from the famous Casa Azul, this newly opened museum reveals a quieter, more intimate side of Frida Kahlo—one I hadn’t fully encountered before.

If Casa Azul tells the story of Frida the icon, Casa Roja introduces you to Frida the daughter, sister, and young woman still becoming herself.

Frida Lovers - This is A Different Kind of Frida Experience

From the moment I stepped inside Casa Roja, I felt less like a museum visitor and more like a guest. The house—painted in deep, earthy red tones—once belonged to Frida’s family and her sister Cristina. Unlike the bustling energy of Casa Azul, this space is calm, reflective, and deeply human.

Room by room, I encountered fragments of Frida’s early life: childhood belongings, family photographs, handwritten letters, and personal objects that speak to her inner world. Seeing her early artwork and textiles—pieces created before fame and myth—was especially moving. These were not works meant for public admiration; they were expressions of curiosity, pain, playfulness, and becoming.

One of the spaces that stayed with me most was the kitchen, preserved with a warmth that made it easy to imagine family conversations unfolding over daily rituals. Another was the lower-level studio area, where Frida once painted and retreated inward.

What struck me most is how Casa Roja centers Frida’s relationships—especially the influence of her father Guillermo Kahlo and the bond with her sister Cristina. The museum doesn’t overwhelm you with interpretation; instead, it lets objects and spaces speak quietly.

Address & Location

Museo Casa Kahlo (Casa Roja)
📍 Aguayo 54, Colonia del Carmen, Coyoacán, 04100 CDMX, Mexico

It’s an easy walk from Casa Azul, making it ideal to visit both in the same day.

Tips from My Visit

Go Early
I recommend visiting earlier in the day when the house feels especially serene and uncrowded.

Book Tickets in Advance
Like Casa Azul, this museum is drawing a lot of interest. Purchase tickets in advance only.

Visit Casa Roja First
If you’re seeing both museums, start with Casa Roja. It adds emotional depth and context before stepping into the more iconic Casa Azul.

 Explore Coyoacán on Sunday

I recommend visiting on a Sunday, only 2 blocks away is Mercado 89, for quick meal and  the artists display original art for sale in front of Mercado 89.

If you love Frida Kahlo—not just the image, but the woman this museum is a must visit.
